Essaouira is 170 kilometres up the coast, around two and a half hours on the road, through argan country most of the way. Inside the ramparts the medina is low, white and blue, laid out on a grid you cannot really get lost in. The port still lands sardines every morning and grills them at the quayside by noon, and the wind that made the town a surf name keeps it cool in August. Long day, easy day.
