Taroudant sits inland on the Souss plain, ringed by ochre earth walls that have stood since the 16th century and still enclose the whole town, which is why people call it the little Marrakech, though it is quieter and far easier to walk. You arrive mid-morning with time for the ramparts and the souks, where spices, leather and silverwork are still sold mostly to people who live here. Then the road turns south to Tioute, where a kasbah stands above a palm grove and lunch is served on the terrace looking down over it (that one is included in the price).
